At first glance, the Sunshine Factory project looked like a standard full-site package: basement foundation excavation, wet and dry utility installation, and a retaining wall. But this project was anything but ordinary. Located just two blocks from the local children’s hospital, the Sunshine Factory was built to offer a joyful, comforting space for children and their families. Funded by two incredible individuals, this facility includes an outdoor playground, indoor slides, playhouses, and a warm, welcoming environment that brings light during difficult times. Sapphire was honored to contribute to such a meaningful cause.
Project Challenges:
The most technically demanding part of this project was the basement excavation. At its deepest, the dig reached 13 feet—manageable under normal conditions. However, the site’s native material was pit run gravel, which continuously sloughed and collapsed during excavation. This required our team to over-excavate larger areas than initially planned, carefully manage slopes, and increase material export volumes—all while staying on schedule.
Final Touches
Once excavation and utilities were complete, Sapphire ensured all site elements were precisely graded and compacted to support the foundation and retaining wall. Attention to detail was critical, not just for structural reasons, but because of the emotional weight this project carried. The Sunshine Factory wasn’t just a job site—it was a place where joy, healing, and community will thrive. We’re proud to have played a role in building something with lasting impact.
